Part 1: The Father of Ethnobotany: the story of Richard Schultes, pioneer of taxonomy and ethnobotany
The field of ethnobotany (Botany: study of plants used in native
medicine) dates back to the earliest observations by a young European
physician in the late 18th Century. Most credit Carl von Linné (Linnaeus),
the Father of Botany, with originating the field of ethnobotany.
Linné observed, among many other plants, the medical uses of the
non-botanical flora in the E. Europe, Latin America and India. One of the most
famous examples is the use of Bufo americanus to treat toothaches,
considered in the 19th Century as a type of Coca-Cola.
The subsequent emergence of taxonomy was not without its
complications. In the early 19th Century, the study of the classification of
flora was accompanied by the discovery of the
saprophytes, organisms which decompose organic matter.
The decomposing of plant tissues was no longer considered a scientific
discovery, but the possibility of intentionally designing plants that
could decompose the human body was published for the first time by Carl von
Linné. This was simply considered as a fantasy for the time, and the germ
plasm that he used to achieve his goal was simply called the miasma.
Further exploration of the miasma plant germ-plasm by Richard Schultes
led to the discovery of the hallucinogenic mushroom (Psilocybe
mushroom), and the early identification of a potent and unique source of
Natural Product(s) which Schultes named, through him, Psilocybe.
It was only after years of unsuccessful research, and the invention of the
more relevant source of mushrooms (namely, reishi), that Schultes decided to
undertake his most famous trip to South America. While Schultes had
access to the toxic fungus (Psilocybe mushroom), its use was more
appropriate for the end of his explorations, and he had to use more
